Wicker Park, baked
Three streets crash into each other at Damen, North and Milwaukee, and most of the good stuff on the Near Northwest Side is a short walk from that corner.
Wicker Park is the neighborhood people mean when they say Chicago got cool in the 90s. The lofts aren't cheap anymore and half the storefronts are chains now, but the bones are still here: a three floor used bookstore, a record shop that eats an afternoon, a trail on an old rail line and a lot of good food. Get off the Blue Line at Damen and let your feet decide.
The Wicker Park vibe, and how it got here
Two brothers, Charles and Joel Wicker, laid out a subdivision around a small park here in 1870. After the Great Fire, people pushed out this way. German brewers and merchants built big houses on Hoyne, still called Beer Baron Row, and later the area became the heart of Polish Chicago, with Division Street known as Polish Broadway.
Then the hard years: the Kennedy Expressway cut through, factories closed. Artists moved in for cheap space in the 80s, and by the 90s it was the center of Chicago's indie rock world. Liz Phair wrote Exile in Guyville here. MTV filmed The Real World here in 2001 and people protested on the sidewalk. What's left is a mix: chains on Milwaukee, Victorian houses on the side streets, dive bars that refuse to die.
Things to do in Wicker Park
Almost everything below is within a 10 minute walk of the Damen Blue Line stop. Do it on foot.

Wicker Park
The six corner intersection
Damen Ave., North Ave. and Milwaukee Ave.Milwaukee runs diagonal, so where it crosses Damen and North you get a six way intersection. That's the center of the neighborhood, with the Blue Line rumbling overhead and the Flat Iron building pointing right at it. Stand on a corner for five minutes and you'll see skaters, strollers and guys in shirts for bands that broke up in 1998.
TipCrossing takes forever because of the light cycle. Patience, it's part of the show.

Wicker Park / Bucktown / Logan Square / Humboldt Park
The 606 (Bloomingdale Trail)
Raised trail along Bloomingdale Ave., from Ashland Ave. west to Ridgeway Ave.An old freight line from 1873 turned into a 2.7 mile park up above the street, opened in June 2015. It runs along the north edge of Wicker Park and links to Bucktown, Humboldt Park and Logan Square. It's a city park, so the smoking ban covers it. Sesh before, then walk it west at sunset with the light coming straight down the trail.
TipWeekend afternoons get crowded with bikes. Go early morning or right around golden hour.

Wicker Park
Myopic Books
1564 N. Milwaukee Ave.The neighborhood's oldest and biggest used bookstore, around since the 90s. Three packed floors, something like 70,000 books, narrow aisles and stairs only past the main floor. Pop in high and you'll lose an hour reading first pages of books you'll never finish.
TipBring your old books. They buy used, so you can trade in and walk out lighter.
-
Wicker Park
Reckless Records
1379 N. Milwaukee Ave.The Wicker Park branch of a Chicago record store with shops in Lake View and the Loop too. Deep new and used vinyl, and a used section that rewards digging. This stretch is a small record row: Shuga Records is at 1272 N. Milwaukee and Dusty Groove is over at 1120 N. Ashland.
TipHit the used bins before new arrivals get picked over on weekends.

Wicker Park
The old Double Door
1572 N. Milwaukee Ave.From 1994 to 2017 this was the rock club in Wicker Park. Smashing Pumpkins and Liz Phair played it, the Rolling Stones did a surprise show in 1997, and High Fidelity shot scenes here. It got evicted in February 2017. A planned Uptown comeback was dropped in early 2026 when costs blew up, so for now it's a building with a story.
TipIt's right next to Myopic. Two stops, one corner.

Wicker Park
Wicker Park (the actual park)
1425 N. Damen Ave.The four acre park the Wickers set aside in 1870. Statue of Charles Wicker, a walking loop, volunteer gardens that look great in summer. It's the neighborhood's backyard for reading, napping and people watching. Smoking's banned in Chicago parks, so treat it as the after spot.
TipGrab takeout from Big Star or Sultan's Market and eat on the grass.
-
Wicker Park
Flat Iron Arts Building
1579 N. Milwaukee Ave.The wedge shaped building at the six corners, designed by Holabird & Roche, with white terracotta and a checkerboard face. It became an artist community in the late 60s and still holds studios. Even from the sidewalk, it's the best building to stare at around here.
-
Wicker Park
Beer Baron Row on Hoyne
N. Hoyne Ave., between Division St. and North Ave.Where the 19th century brewers built their mansions. The Wicker Park Historic District has been on the National Register since 1979. Quiet, shady, and every house is a little ridiculous. Best stroll in the neighborhood when you're cooked.
TipThese are private homes. Walk, look, keep it down.
Wicker Park restaurants worth the walk
Wicker Park restaurants run from cheap falafel to 12 course tasting menus. For munchies, these are the ones still standing in 2026 that we keep going back to. A moment of silence for The Violet Hour on Damen, the great cocktail bar behind the unmarked door, which closed for good in June 2025.
-
Wicker Park
Big Star
1531 N. Damen Ave.Tacos and whiskey across from the six corners, open since around 2010 and still packed. Al pastor, fish, papas con rajas. Margaritas by the pitcher and a whiskey list longer than your attention span. The patio is the whole point in summer.
TipSkip the patio line and use the to-go window. Same tacos, no wait.
-
Wicker Park
Piece Brewery and Pizzeria
1927 W. North Ave.New Haven style thin crust and house brewed beer since 2001. The move is the plain: red sauce, no mozzarella, the way they do it in Connecticut. Or go all in with clams and bacon. Big tables, built for groups.
TipGet a pitcher of the house beer and order more pizza than you think.
-
Wicker Park
Sultan's Market
2057 W. North Ave.Cheap Middle Eastern counter food. Falafel and shawarma sandwiches, wrapped tight and heavy. BYOB if you're sitting down. It's the best value bite in the neighborhood.
TipFalafel sandwich, extra sauce, eat it on the walk.
-
Wicker Park
Antique Taco
1360 N. Milwaukee Ave.Playful tacos down by the record row. The mushroom taco with ranch sounds wrong and tastes right. Save room for the homemade pop tart.
TipPair it with a Reckless dig right up the block.
-
Wicker Park
Paulie Gee's Wicker Park
1566 N. Damen Ave.New York style pies a few steps off the six corners. Pepperoni if you're simple, roasted pork with pineapple habanero salsa if you're feeling brave.
TipIf Big Star's slammed, this is the plan B half a block away.
-
Wicker Park
Oiistar
1385 N. Milwaukee Ave.Ramen right next door to Reckless. House bowls you won't find elsewhere, and a hot, salty, slurpy fix on a cold night is exactly what your body is asking for.
TipWinter nights are its best season.
A perfect Wicker Park afternoon into night
Sesh at home base, then take the Blue Line to Damen. Walk up to the six corners, get your bearings, and duck into Myopic for an hour. Walk past the old Double Door next door. Head north a block and climb onto The 606, then walk it west toward Humboldt Park and back while the sun drops. Come down for tacos at Big Star, or pizza and a pitcher at Piece if your crew is big. Finish with a slow loop down Hoyne past the beer baron mansions, then go dig at Reckless before they close. Still hungry at the end of the night? Arturo's Tacos and Margie's Candies sit across from each other at Western and Armitage. More on those in where to eat high.
Neighborhoods next door
Bucktown is right across North Avenue, quieter and a little richer. Go west on The 606 or up Milwaukee and you hit Logan Square, the boulevard neighborhood with the Logan Theatre and a great bar scene. Ukrainian Village sits just south of Division. The Blue Line runs you downtown in minutes, and from there the West Loop is a short hop for a fancier dinner. Want a movie after? Check where to watch.
